' THOMAS COOK * SON, 95 PItINCES STREET. Publications, "XT- ° W ° N SALE: " MEMORIES OF THE LIFE OF J. F. H. WOHLERS, MISSIONARY AT RUAPUKE." An Autobiography. Translated from the German by John Houghton This Book is a history of the life and work of the Rev. J. F. H. Wohlers, Missionary at Ruapuke, written hy himself—the original work having been published in Bremen iu 18S3. I Coming to New Zealand iu 1843, he estab- , lished ' himself as a missionary amongst the , Maoris at Ruapuke. He converted communities (to use bis own words) of loathsome savages, sunk in poverty and degradation, into communities of prosperous, civilised human beings, receiving for many years no remuneration whilst so doing, but producing his own food out of the soil, and I, teaching the Maoris to do the same after a civilised manner; thus saving people's souls and their bodies as well. He preserved and fully . records thc old Maori mythology (a sublime one), the custodians of which all died before his own demise. His Book is a valuable record of the f early history of New Zealand, and is writteu with great literary taste and poetic aud pious i feeling. Can be ordered from Booksellers.
