The Otago Chess Club is to be congratulated upon the response which vras. received last night to its invitation to members to play a match between residents on the north side of Liverpool street and those od the south Bide. No fewer than 60 players took part in the match—this feeing probably the largest number ever engaged ia a watch iv New Zealand—and among; these were iivn ladies. The p!»y was more rapid and less serious than is usu»ily ths case at a chess congreFS, but it WiS tor all that exceedingly interesting, and a plsasant evening'was spent by those present. Refreshments were served at an interval in the proceedings. .The rules arranged for the match provided that if one pla>erwins two gameß he is to play no further match games, otherwise each pair of players may play three K-imcs, but no fresh game to bei»in after 9.30 p.m. Is will be s>een by the following score that victory rested with the North :— North.
