FIRST CHURCH LITERARY SOCIETY.
The opening meeting of this society was held in the hall of the church on Monday night, when an Interesting concert was given. The Rev. J. Gibb occupied the chair, nud there waß a large attendance. The programme consisted of vocal and instrumental solos, recitations; trio, duets, &0., and the following laijies and gentlemen took part:—Miss Hardie, pinno soln, " Alia Turca" ; piano duet, Mjssbb Fraaer and Wilson, "La Retour dv -Printeiaps "; mandolin solo, Mis 6K. Pardoe, ".Ricordo di Italia". (encored); recitations— "lasca," Miss\ VVilkie, "Fitsjaraes nnd Roderick Dhu,"Mr 6. Rnlayson; t-ongs—"Love has eyes," Miss B.» Stewart; "Whisper and I shall hear, Miss Morrison; vocal trio, "'Ye shep. herds, tell me," MiiSiie* Brown and Thonieon and Mr J. Ji. Saliponcl; songs—" Killarney," Mr A. SntherUind; "The qhijdren's. home," Mr D. Hutton'(encored)';' " A warrior boM " Mr J..Armstrong ;""l'he Romany la^s," Mr J. L. Saltnond ; "The flight of .ages," "Mr K. Ramsay, jun. (encored); flute solo, Mr Bowie (encored); c.met duet, "Norma,'1 Messrs J. J. Dickie and E. W. Taylor. MUs R. Puterson acted aa accompanist. An enjoyable gathering, and one which augurs well for the futura of the society, which meets every alternate Moqday eyening for the next'fivs months, was brought to a close by Mr Gjbb pronouncing the benediction, after a hearty vote of thanks had been carried to the performers, on the motion of Mr P. Gray.
