RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION IN SCHOOLS.
Tho annual meetings of hou«eholders for ill i election of school oommittces, held last evening, showed pretty plainly that the religious instruction in schools party has beoome a strength in the land, or at anyrate in the Wellington City. In several of the schools the religions instruction party gained complete victories, returning substantial iU3Jorifcies of their cnudidateo to the committees, while in others tney strengthened their position. Of course tUene victories do not chow the relative ttrenj;tU of the parties. The I fact that tho advecstes of religions instruction were well organised while the seoular party i were without the flighteat preteuce of unity accounts for the results of the elections. RU'» Tusker, who has taken a promiuent p*rt in womn'a political eocietfes, was defeated for the Mount Cook Committee by two votes. THE CENSUS 11KTUUNS. The Benevolent Institution Trustees this afternoon decided to try the experiment of appointing b woman to iuspsct und report on all cases of'pemons rcceiviug charitable aid. It is comidered advi<ablc to have a female us well as a mule inspector, and this experiment ia to ba tried for six months.
