EDUCATION BOARD.
The following ie nn addendum to our report of the proceedings at the Education Board on Thursday :— VALEDICTORY. Dr Stf.niiousk said us that was his last appiwrnnee at the meetings of the Kducotion Board ho wished to make a few valedictory remarks. Ho stood there a defeated candidate, but he was neither a surprised uor a disappointed man. He owed his defeat entirely to the fact that he did not light the battle as he inteuded to do when he tabled a certaiu notice cf motion at the board referring to members of tho board wlfo were also members of Parliament. When bo brought forward that motion it. was said that he did sn in order to ensure his olt'ction. After he issued his first circular to committees he inteuded sendin.™ out u second one explaining the position of mutters, and had hedoue so he was confident that he could have entirely altered the voting of, committees. He, however, considered that by Hoit.j; so he would be jeopardising his motion as a principle. He was not goiug to take up that position, ' and, after due consideration, he determined to leave the matter an ic w:is. Thut was tho explanation of his defeat. Now he had a pleasing duty to perform—namely, to record lii« hearty thanks to the committees who supported him. He wss proud, iudecd, to know that there wore 55 committees in Otngo who stood by him nutwUhatmudiug the great efforts that were used on all bauds to defeat him, and that he was figlitins a lost battle. He wished to say of them what Napoleon frequently was called upon to say of his own guard—". That they have covered themselves with slory."—(Loud laughter und apphiuao.) As regarded the rominittees that did not yote for him he could not thank them, bat hfi could unsure them that he fouud it very easy to forgive thorn.—(Laughter.) WOODUANJ) ANl> JtIMU. itesnrs Clark, Horrie, and Mackenzie were appointed a committee to visit tho Woodland (Hid liiimi district to impure into the education requiremoute there, and report to next meeting.
