FIRES.

A fire was discovered at 7.15 yesterday morning by one of the; workmen in Messrs A. Stoven and Co.'s flonrmill at the Water of Leith, An alarm was gives, and on Captain Mitchell and ■the Fire Brigade arriving, thanks to the efforts previously made by the workmen in the mill, the flames were got under after a jet of water bad been turned on for a few minutes. The .fire originated in the drying kiln, through the grain igniting and the flames spreading to the roof. The ( damage is estimated at £30 or £4-0. The building, machinery, and stock were.insured for £5000 in tbe Royal, New Zealand, Manchester, and Imperial offices.

Mr William Sband's house at Meadowbank, East Taieri, destroyed by fire on Monday afternoon, was insured in the Norwich Union office for £200. The furniture, owned by Mr Shore, who occupied the house, was insured in the New Zealand office for £50.
