THE ROWTNG WORLD.
Notes By Abawa.
The Invercargill regatta was held on Wednesday last and it appears to havo been a success. The weather was fine aud the attendance of the public was large. From southern files I find that the representatives of the Railway Clab come ont " top " as regards the winning. They secured the Senior Inrigged Pairs and Champion Invigged Fours, while in the Ladies' Plate and the Meiden Inrigged Pairs they gained second pl*cs ; their total wiunings thus amounting to £1310s. The Awarna Club's prize money totalled £12. They won the Maiden Inrigged Four,), L\die»' Plate, and Maiden Inrigged .Pairs, while they got second place in the Champion Inrigged Fours. The Invercargill Club representatives gave a poor account of themselves. Their only win was in the Outrigger Pairs, butthe only competitors in the event were the club's two ere (rs.
The Bluff crew's defeat by the Railway representatives was a matter for some surprise. A southern 6cribe holds that the best crew won notwithstanding that the Bluff men were badly stsered and an accident happened to No. 3's elide.
The Otago Rowing Association, in pursuance of the object to obtain funds whereby they wonld be enabled to render assistance to crews attending the Championship meeting, hays decided to hold a' variety entertainment at, whioh performers from all the various rowing clubs will take part. The D.A.B C, wifch their usual generosity, have offered the use of ths club's ball, and as a Urge number of promises of assistance have been made it o».ly rests with the rowing men themselves to make the thing a financial success by pushing the sale of tickets. The concert, which is fixed for Thursday evening, is likely to be an exceedingly attractive one. Among the performers are Messrs Jago, Myers, Young. Priest, Howliaon, Bloxam, Platts, Swan, Robertshaw, and a number of other*, besides several ladies. Mr Robertshaw is attending to the musical arrangements, which is sufficient, guarantee tbat everything will run smoothly. The Australasian Championship is to be held in Sydney in May next, and the New Zealand Association proposes to send a crew to represent the colony in the Four-oared Championship, while it is also proposed to send a New Zealand representative to contest the Intercolonial Sculling Championship, which has beeu added to the programme by the Australian Rowing Association. The secretary of the New Zealand Association hopes to be able to announce at tho meeting oE delegates in Picton a month hence that the amount required to meet the expenses of the trip— namely, £120—has been contributed by the affiliated clubs. Mr Barns Btates that it is estimated that this sum will be, sufficient to cover the expenses of tho crew, its coxswain, a' sculling competitor, and a delegate to the Rowing Conference, besides giving the men three weeks in Sydney prior to the date of the racea. It i« proposed tbis year to send across tbe crew which wins the Championship Fours at' Easter.
Jock M'Grath has started training again in view of the coming Picton regatta.
The Hyams Fours is tbe next clnb event at tho D.A.B.C. shed, and the crews are doing steady work. Ths Otago Club got the final of its Ladies' Challenge Cup rowed off on Monday night. .The result was as follows :— W Leckie (stroke), T. M'Queen (3), A. Johnston (2), P. Apstein (boy). J. Watson (cox)... 1 J. Howlisoii (strokn). J Shaud (3), J. Thomson (2), J. Palmer (bow), G. Samson (cox) 2 Tbe water was fairly good, and the crews, who got away by mutual consent, effected a good start. Leckie assumed the lead at the three legs, but near the entrance of the bisin Howlison'o men got on even terms again, but Li-ckie spurting won by half «. length. Tho final heats of the N.E.B.C. 220fds and Woyd3'running events, which were postponed from last week, will come off at Carisbrook to-morrow evening. The first heat will start at 7 o'clock sharp. In addition to the above events there will ba a handicap mile run for the members who have been debarred from competing in the clan's amateur races. A Welliegton Press Association telegram says :—The letter from the Canterbury Rowiug Club to tbe secretary of the New Zealand Amiteur Rowing Association askiog the latter body,to arrange, if possible, a test race for any combined crew, with a view to select the best possible -crew to represent New Zealand in the Australasian Championship Fours, has been considered by the council of the association. The decision arrived at by the council was that the matter was one which should be dealt with by a meeting of delegates, and the suggestion, of the Canterbury Club will therefore be referred to tho meeting at Picton on April 4. Some members of the council were io favour of the crew proposed by the Cauterbury Club (Cowlishaw, Daly, Crosbie, and Samuels) bsing eucouraged to continue in training and run their chauce of beating the winners of the Champion Fours; others held that the composition of the crew was entirely a matter for a si-lection committee ; while others were strongly of opinion th^t the first crew to represent New Zealand iv Australia should be the winning crew in the Champion Fours.
