THE BLAND HOLT SEASON.

"THE FATAL CARD," TO-NIGHT.

There was another packed audience at the P/incesß Theatre last evening to witness tho final representation.of "Saved From the Sea,'* by the Bland Holt Company. The popular manager and the leading members of his company were repeatedly called before the curtain, nnd the marine melodrama went with the smoothness and finish whicfi characterises Mr Holt's representations.

To-night "The Fatal Card" will be produced for the first time in'Dnnedin, and local playgob will kve all o'pporliinityof wilnoMfojj one of tha latest aod peatat of tMdelphi successes. The work is from the joint pens of Messrs 0. Haddon Chambers and B. C. Stephenson, and is acknowledged to he one of the finest melodramas of modern times. When first produced in London it ran to 10 months to packed business at the Adelphi, and co great was •its success thatitwas transferred tothePrincess's, where it enjoyed an extended ran at an advance in prices. The story is one which claims the attention of the audience from the rise to the fall of'the curtain, and has more than ordinary interest for southern audiences from the fact that one qf the joint authors is an Australian. Special attention has been paid to the scenic effects, and the play may at once be described as an interesting drama with a strong plot, picturesque colouring, and elaborate scenic effects. Mr Holt's very capable company are well placed, and will be seen to tho utmost advantage in the production to-night. The reputation of the piece has preceded it, and is so favourably known that it needs nob many words-to commend it to Dunedin audiences. Mr Holt may look forward to a bumber houae to-night and through the too short tun of this reputable work.

The recent election in Auckland was interest. ing. inasmuch as it gave the public an opportunity of seeing how far the local newspapers will go in urging their favourites' claims to the support of the "free and independent." No one fact was recorded by either side thafc was nofejdehied, or qualified, or misrepresented by the other. Perhaps Emile Zola's suggestion to let everjjirticle carry a signature would h&ve a salutary effect, but alas ! we do not in New Zealand limit our "guiding power" to leading articles. We distort facts; we wilfully ignore current events, in order to briDg about that consummation —the election of "our party" man. • There is one subject both sides agree on, and. that is that Vanity Fair Cigarettes are worthy'of the confidence of both parties.
