CITY COUNCIL REPORTS.

The following are summaries of the reports to be presented at this evening's meeting of the City.Couflcil:— ' ' ' ' ' '

The Public Works Committee recdmmend (1) that the charge of 5s per annum to Dr Gordon Macdonald and Mr A. J. Shaw for permission to connect their house drains with the sower: iv High- street be remitted; and (2) that Mr I. S. Be Beer's application for a pipe sewer in portion of London ■ street, Heribt row, and Scotland street be granted at a cost of about £110, provided the residents interested contribute onehalf that amount; The committee submit for tbe consideration of the council the city surveyor's report of- the 16th inst., clause 3, asking'instructions as to (1) retention of clause as to minimum rate of wages in dnat removal contract; (2) term of »tre*t cleansin E contract; and (3) inclusion of clause enforcing payment of current rate of waged rind observance of eight hours' working iiay in street cleansing contract. The Reserves Committee recommend (1) that the application of tbe Perpetual Trustees, Estate, and Agency Company for consent to plan of sections 94, H5, 96/ and 96A, block XXXII, Bunedin, which includes the land between the original boundary of tbe sections and tbe present bank of the Water-of-Leith, and shows also an alteration in the position of Mill avenue, be declined and the original survey adhered to; (2) that the council agree to contribute one half the cost up to £125 of the fence which the Dunedin and Suburban Reserves Conservation Society propose to orect round the Market Reserve; (3) that Alexander Gardner, employed on the Belt, be formally appointed sub-ranger. The CSaa Committee report having granted the application of Messrs A. and T. Biirt for permission to fit a' sample three-light incandescent cluster burner to'one of the street lamps in the Triable The request of Messrs James Macfie and Co. (Limited) to have the quantity of Kast Greta coal for ; testing increased trom 50 tons has been agreed{to, and HO tons will now ba delivered. A reply has been sent to the Grey Valley Coal Company that'the quantity of coal received and ordered outside their contract does notexceed the limit reserved by the 'council'when accepting the company^ tcudw. Messrs Roads and Hunter's tender for treuchine and main-laying in llattray street lias been accepted at the following rates, viz.;— Trenching per chain, 16s; carting per ton, 2s; extra, manholes, each, Is.

The Water Committee report that the action taken in stopping Mr J. O'Neill from mining on the" :Silvmstream Watarworks reserve, complained of by him, bus been approved of by the committee: ■ •.,' ■ •

The Finance Committee report that the appliestiona.of the following ratepayers for remission.of half rates on empty property, in accordance with "The Rating Act 1894 Amendment Aot 1895," haye;been granted :—Messrs'. P. Haymau and Co., offices,; ■Exchibgß Court; .Mr J, Hatton, house, Melville street;, and Mrs M. A. Howliaon, three shops, Great King street. Accounts have been passed for payment amounting to £2026 le. The General Committee report having declined Mr Logan Wilson's application for a nightsoil box, andjiWith reference to Mrs C. Wilson's and Mr J. Ellis's objections -to Mr E. Hubbard's application for a night&oil box, decided to adhere te their former decision granting the application.
