The annual shipping returns show than 1694 ships arrived at Port Jackson, with a tonnage of 3,179,000—an increase of over 89,000 tonson the previous year; while 133G left the port with a tonnage ef 2,754,000 —an increase of 122,700 tons over 1894. Tho number of seamen engaged through the shipping office was 11,200, and the numbar discharged registered 10,100. Tbe total amonnt of seamen's wages paid was L33>650. The intercolonial coastal trade, especially in regard to steamera, has a much healthier tone than in 1891. There is remarkable activity all round, and many vessels which have been lyiDg idle have basn placed in profitable commission. Both the passenger and freight rates are greatly improved, Special reference is made to the recovery of these rates to and from New Zealand.
