Chapteb ll.—ln the lawyer's office. A WB&ithy client places a large sam of money for investment in Hardcastle's hands, who immediately goes to the buck and pays it in to his own account. Grimshav/, a poor man, comes to get baok £800 which he has trusted in the lawyer's hands, and is put off with promises which ore cever fulfilled. Hardcastle then purchases a number of valuable diamonds, which he secures in a belt round his waist. CfiArrEß lII.—At sea on board the Dnnbar. The ship is struck by an iceberg in a dense fog; only two boats left. Hurdcastle takes his place in the one .appointed for the women, and shoves off, leaving two women and the rest of the men to their fate.
