TITHES AND THE AGRICULTURAL INDUSTRY.

TO THE EDITOR.

Sib,—Many items have appeared in your columns lately with refereoee to tho low stote of agriculture, coupled nith'inst&ucas of lowered rentals for farms, in England. The late H K. Farqubarsou, M.i"., in au appeal ta churchmen in tho " National Review," has a strong indictment against the Church of England for exacting excessive tithes, and thus bringing about this agricultural distress. He says:—"ln Essex they have devastated half a county. Ko conquering army could leave greater ruin in its oourae, and in other counties millions of acres are annually impoverished in order to meet their exactions."

, Ec also shows that when the " Commutation Act 1891" was passed tbe normal price of corn was Bstimated at 5Ss 2d p3r quarter for wheat, 31s 8d for barley, and 2& for oats. The pxcetieive tithes are now pnid with wheat at . 18s per quarter, barley at 23s Bd, and oats at 13s 6d, and only the bait samples will fotch that money to-day, the second and third rats sample! beiog congumsd at. Home. Last year, in countless instances, owing to tha terrible depression the cultivators of tho soil not only obtained no profit, but found thetasslves involved in heavy'lossen.

~ This churchman maintains that the poverty of some of her clergy is no justifieatioa for the Church of England oppressing the oppressed and takirjg from tlie land more than is their just due, but is rather a standing disgrace to iibose wealthy lajmen of their church who can subscribe so largely to church defence funds.

Ha predicts that unlesii some cteps are tuken to curtail the demands made by the titbe-owners in the name 01 tbe ciiuroh x. crisis will arise which will free the agricultural industry from the pitiless hand of tbe tithe-owners now gcaeniDg it to its extinction and ruin.—l am, &c, Danedin, January 16.
