An Autobiography.' _ Translated from the German by John ftoudHTON This Book is a history of the life and work of the Rev. J. F. H. Wbhlers, Missionary at Ruapuke, written by himself—tbe oriiriiial work having been published in Bremen in 1883. Coming to New Zealand1 in 1843, he established himself as a missionary amongst the Maoris at Ruapuke. He converted communities (to use his own words) of loathsome savages, sunk iv poverty and degradation, into communities of prosperous, civilised human beings, receiving for many years no remuneration whilst so doing, but producing his n\vn food out of the soil, and teaching the Maoris to do the same after a civilised manner; thus saving people's souls and their bmie3 as well. He preserved and fully records the old Maori mythology (a niblime one), the custodians of which all died before his otvn demise. His Book is a valuable record of the early history of New Zealand, and is written with great literary taste and poetic and'pious feeling. ... .
