SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS.

The swimming championships were begun at the Kstatorium, Sydney, last night, under the auspices of the New South Wales Association.
The 220 yds Amateur Championship of Australasia resulted thus :—Jack Hellings 1, W. J. Gormley 2, L. Leo 3. It was a splendidly-contested race, and an exciting finish, Hellings winning by a few inches. Time, 2min 52-iec. The New Zealand representatives (Messrs Hoey and Biiley, of Auckland) finished third in their respective heats.
Plunging Ohamoionsbip. — Peate (East Sydney), GGft IOMn, 1; Stapleton, 63ft, 2; Harvey, 60ft, 3. Peate's performanoa creates a world's record, which was previously held by Taylor (England) with 66£t 7in. At the swimming carnival on the Hnwkesbury river to-day the lesults were: — Oae-mile Amateur Championship of Australia—Percy Cavill 1, Leo 2, Hosy 3. It was a fine rsce throughout, and the placed men were all close together at the finish. Time, 28min Esse.
