Great surprise wos canaed in '{own this morning on receipt of news that Bdmand Black, a young man well connerted, hid committed suicide at hie horns at Greon Maadowe Alongside him .was found a bottle of pru«9io acid. Dee3»sed, who was secretary to the.Chamber of :Ci.moierci«, the Caledonian Society and Jibe Hawke's Bay Free Association, returned home from town last night, apparently in'the bc-sfc spirits, but ou beW o»Ued this morning failed to pat in an appearance. He was subsequently found dead m a stable by, his brother-in-law. • Deceased leavas a wife and -several children. At the inquest.the evidence failed to dwolose any motive for self-destruction, as he had boeu very jarful, and , attended ■ a performance of Pinafore" the night before. He had pucohased poison that evening, £ ayi D g he wished to destroy a dog which bad been injured. The vsrdict was that he died from poison'' selfadminutered, and that no one was to blame.
' Hokitika, October 17. .Hugh Owens, a well-known miner, was cwried down his tailrace at Back'creek this afternoon, and died within 15 minates of being taken out. He leaves a-wifeand several amall children. _
