.* The New Zealand Shipping Company's new cargo steam f Kakaia. is described as a very handsome vessel. She is built on similar lines to the Buteshire and Perthshire, although she is more graceful in appearance. The saloon, which has accommodation for about 15 persons, is elaborately fitted up, while she has smoking and readiugroomß fitted in the most approved style. Pending the construction of a new steamer to replace the ill-fated Catterthun, her running will be taken up by the s.s. Pathan, and the Eastern and Australasian S.S. In running down her easting she passed through a lot of ice and several immense bergs. During the passage across the Southern Ocean of the White Star liner Aberdeen, which arrived at Sydney on the 12th inst., she passed an immense berg on July 25, in lat. 45.35 S., long. 59 M. On the tollowiug day several large icebergs were seen, but the Aberdeeu, being well under control, was able to make her escape from them. ■ .. .

The schooner Ocean Rover arrived at Sydney on August 13, from Kaipara, after a tempestuous passage. On the Sunday ( after leaving the schooner shipped a big sea which smashed the taffrail, carried away the port and starboard bulwarks, and smashed two of the boats. One of the side-lii;hts was washed over the side. The deck load of timber also broke adrift, and pieces of planking were forced high up the rigging, where they hung for some time. One of the crew had a more thrilling experience. He was amidship, when a sea caught him and lifted him five ratlines up the - main ringing. This he clutched, and thus paved himself a watery grave. The provisions were also damaged.
