THE HOROWHENUA BLOCK.
(Per United Press Association.) Wellington, August 27. Another phase of the Horowhenua'Block was before the Supreme Court to-day. In 1874 after a tribal row Sir Donald M'Lean,;then Native Minister, visited the locality and held meetings' of Natives, and eventoaliy arranged with Major'Kemp that the Muaupoko should give up 1300 acres of land near. Hprpwhenua Lake to the representatives of -.Te Wbatenni. This'was done, but the camt-s of Te Whatanui's representative* were not settled. Subsequently 8s those planning to be his. dessendants could not agree a.mom;st themsrl7jJ3 as to the owner- | ship and division of tbe. block the matter was referred by Orderrin-Coupcii, to the Native Lands Coprfc. A partial-compromise .was.come to bsfore Judge ilack&y, but subsequently an appeal was made to a bighsr court by-the descendants of the sister, when the judge awarded them half of the block, being 200 acres more thau the amount awarded thrpugh Judge Mackay. The lineal deßcejodantsj of Te Wh&fcanui next moved,for a writ of prohibition on tke'gi'p.nnd th»fc the epuit had no •juris-"'' diction under the Order-in-Couneil to award anytbiug at all to the descendants of the sister. Tbe Chief Justice granted the writ, at' the same time expressing regret* that proceedings had been taken, and intiinajipg that probably tbe Executive would interfera to prevent what yfas oVmquaiy a miscarriage of justice. ■■
