LAWRENCE.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) . ";.". August 17. At last the weather shows signs of improvement, and not before it was wanted, as even now those farmers who intend sowing wheat will be late enough, a good many ..owing to the inclement weather not having yet got through their -! ploughing. "_ .OaFriday the remains of one;of our Blue Spur Pioneers were -folio we*, tothe cemetery. I refer tothe late MrH. C. Clayton. All the mi tiers in the district attended to pay that last mark of respect to his memory, ; Ho was universally liked and respected by all with whom he come iv contact. : I'or.rnany; years he qccupied the positioubf some of our largest mining companies, but latterly he turned, his attention to agricultural and pastor. 1 pursuits until ill-health compelled him to relinquish that occupation and remove into Lawrence for medical attention, where lie remained until his death. He leaves behind him a widow to mourn her loss. .. , ..'■•. The frost having now thawed on the higher levels, the Consolidated Company have again got to work. The Local Industry Company have for some time back been: workiug night and day to "i utilise their water supply. This company have, Itnmk, good prospects ahead, the shareholders i ibavine.now got all their capital back in dividends, and are possessed of a flrst-class hydraulic-1 | : plant,-with a good few years'work ahead., .The lua.peka Sluicing Gompany.in Munrois Gully, are continuing to receive good returns, fr-im-their' enterprise. The Tuapeka Dredging Company above the Beaumont, are also getting better results than formerly. ■•.:..„.,■■.;•'..... •_■ The second pontoon for Pringle and Co.'s new dred ,c wai launched during the week; so as- soon tiie decks are on they will be' ready for receiving . tne maohinery. .Dividends declared during the week:—Golden Treasure, Is 6d per share ■ Golden Riui and Local industry Company, each Is per share. : iv-1*8 "manager of the Golden Run Company, Mr i). Ballantyne, was the recipient'of the present .ot a.valuable clock from, tbe shareholders of the company, as a token of their appreciation of .his services, snd I .am sure that all who know 'him recognise: that ha well deserves the compliment, and that he is the right man ia the right place. ■'■'.- Between 60' and 70 men are to'start work on the co-operative principle on the Rankleburn-Heau-mont road about the middle of next week; and there are a few on the same system on the Lawrence-Waipori road. -, There is some talk of the Government taking over the maintenance of the main road. Lawrence to Clyde. It is to be fervently.hoped the rumour is true; as the present state of things is a disgrace. X or instance, aismall bridge or culvert at Judge's creek which broke down about two years ago has not up to the pment time been re-erected-all tbe traffic meanwhile hiving to make a roundabout deviatiou, which iv winter time and after dark is not a very easy matter.

MR DUTHIE'S CRITICISM OF GOVERNMENT FINANCE. TO THE EDITOR.

Sir,—Your leader in a recent issue referring to the exposure by Mr Duthie of the falsity of the Government's various , surpluses is most apropos. The figures given by Mr Duthie are so clear aud convincing that anyone can understand them, and I think steps should be taken to enable every Dunedia and suburban elector to have a copy of his statement. This could be done either by publishing it in full in the columns of your paper,-or by distributing it as a leaflet'or circular. The cost would not be much, and personally I.should be glad to contribute my mite to it.—lam, &c., Dunedin, August 17. H. S. Fish
