A Melbourn«f/Cibl9grara states that the overdraft of the Victoria Racing Club has been reduced during the year by £3200, and that it is hoped to save £7000 this year. The liabilities are set down at £31,000. The Winter meeting of the Dunedin Amateur Tf6ttiog Club takes place this iifterooon at St. Clair. The first event will ctart at 1.30. The club have decided to run a lOi'totalisator.
Mr Bishop, stipendiary magistrate of Chriatcburch, delivered jud^meafc yesterday iv the case of the Police v. tha Pi-tss Company, the latter being charged with a breach of " The Gaming and Lotteries Act 188$," section 3, subjection 3. The magiitrata held that there was nothing to prevent the Legislature from making a law to prohibit newspapers from publishing matter in New Zealand rfebpfctipg raattar outside its own territory. On the facts, he found that tho advertisement in question (Oxenham's) invited people to take shares in a foreign swEepstake ; sod on the law, he held r "tlnt the defendant in publishing , the advertisement brought himself witb'in the operation of the act. Defendant was fined 20s and costs. An appeal will be made on the question of law.
