Omapere left the Rattvay street wharf yesterday afternoon for the West Coast, via Timaru. The barquentine Dclmira is making good progress with the discharge of her cargo of guano and taking in ballast. The a.s. Dingadee is to be docked atPortChal:moia for har periodical overhaul. ' The s.s. Corinna. from Wellington and Lyttelton, will arrive at Port Chalmers thi3 morning. The many friends of Captain James, 'of the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Oo.'s ship Auckland, will be glad to know he is expected to arrive here early in September. The s.e. Omapere has been fitted with a set of Captain Cameron's boat-lowering appliances similar to those placed on board the s.s. Te Anau a few months siuce. This apparatus is both Bimple and effective, and should come into general vie. The s^b. Invercargill is to be floated out of the graving dock.to-day. The s.s. Maori goes north about Tuesday next. The ship Waimate discharged her combustibles inlo the powder craft yesterday. The s.s. Dingadee was removed to the wharf under, the shear legs yesterday in readiness for docking. Mr William Francis Stewart, second officer of the s.s. Grafton, on Wednesday last passed his examination for a certificate of competency as master of a Home trade passenger ship. Ihe^combination ocean freight and passenger steamers will not become a thing of the past eniiiely, but the time is near when the distinctively ocean passenger steamer, will be common enough. It is but natural that with stuady and enormous increase in transportation the ocean traffic, should take on some of the features of railroad work, and freight and passenger business be cariied on-in different vessels. Upon very long voyages this may not be done for years to come, if it really ever is, owing to the comparative lack of trade that would not permit of the expense. But in the North Atlantic trade and in other directions the change is certain. The movement is seen in the increase and improvement of the purely freight steamer and in the decreasing space set aside for cargo in the latest of the first-class passenger boats. The next move, will be an allotment of room (or express matter only, and the passenger boat will then be what her name implies. Whether the purely passenger boat will be divided into two*classes one with extra accommodations at high rates, extra speed, and answering in a measure to a Pullman car and the other of slower speed, good accommo- ' dation and reasonable fare, is a matter of opinion as yet, but if the travel across the Atlantic keeps up its steady increase, then further discussion of traffic may be expected.-New York Maritime
