THE NEW SOUTH WALES ELECTIONS.

Preaa Association—By Telegraph— Copyright.

Sydney, Jaly 25. After ths election Mr D. O'Connor, speaking on behalf of Sir EL Parkes, said that although he was defeated the'movement of which he was the champion and exponent had only began, and that in a short time a reaction would commence, and the common secsa of the people would sweep the present party in power from tho politic*! field.

The Diily Telegraph considers the result one of the most brilliant and conclusive victories ever won by a.Government,in the electoral arena of this colony. It says that in their blind rags the Legislative Councillors pulled down the whole >structure of Conservatism about their own ears, buryiag Protection and other forms of monopoly in the

ruins. - ' | The Ht-rald says tbat xth3 Government are | so strong that perhaps they trill be able to | command a raaJDiilyin thVliouse without the aid of tho Labour, members ; and .that it a count wore made merely in accordance • with fiscal faith tha majority on the side o£ Freetrade would be found large enough to virtually dispose of that question and remove it. . - ■ Tha following members of the Opposition have been re - elected: —Mr John" Perry, Ballina; Mr T. Waddell, Oobar ;Mr F. Clarke

(Labour), Hastings and Macleay; Mr A. Campbell, Kiaina; Mr T. Fiizpatriclc, Murrumbidgee; Mr J. Gormly (Labour), Wagga ; Mr J. M. Ouanter, Deailiquin; Mr J. G. Carroll, The Lacblan; Mr A. Chapman, Braidwbod; Mr It Fitzgerald, Eobertson.

Watkine, Wallsend; Mr Clark (Opposition), who replaces Mr Rawlinsoa, the late Opposition member for Bega. Mr A, Piddington (Ministerialist) replaces Sir G. RDibba for Tamworch.' Those Frastr&de members who followed Sir H. Parkes have lost theirseats. The Premier, in an address after the election, referring to tae wealthy classes, said that ho would do them justice, though he owad tlnni nothing. His first care would not be for the man who conld take such good care of themselves, but for the welfare of the bulk of the people. Mr W. Stephen (Freetrader), sitting member for Botany, was defeated by Alderman Dacsy, a Labour-Ministerialist candidate. Owing to Sir G. R. Dibbs's defeat, Mr W. G. Lyne is likely to become leader of the Opposition. Sir G. Dibbs, in taking farewell of his constituents, aaid that for his services in obtaining for tha producers a market and | saving them from unfair tsvsation he stood a ] defeated man. The floodgates of destruction were now fairly open, and thaj would have to pay the'piper. The colony was hot governed by the voice of the people, but by a syndicate in the 3haps of tha Diily Telegraph, whose sole objsct was to pull down every strocg Government. Mr Rsid was thair pappot, and; was willing to dance to their music. For Tnmutj Mr T. Jones (Oppositionist) and Mr Channoa (Ministerialist) tiad. The following have been re-elected i—Mr G. H. Grease (Indeuendenr, - Freetrader) GrenfoU; Mr W. P. Crick (Oppositionist) for V/es^ Macquarie; Mr H H. Brown (Oppositionisr.) for l>arham; Mr C. Collins (Ministerialist) for Narrabri. The returns from two electorates ara still incomplete, Mr H. C. Wheeler (Ministerialist-) is leading Mr JR. Stevenson (OppositionisS) for Northumberland, and Mr R. H. Levieh (Oppositio'aist) i 3 ahead of Mr Perry (Labour) at Qairindi. It is improbable, however that these positions will ba altered.

The position of parties ia as follows :— * Ministerialists, 79; Oppositionists,. 43; Independent Freetraders, 2. Otharwisa arranged there are 60 Freetraders, 43 Protectionist?, 19 labour, and 2 Indepsndent Freetraders. .
