BANQUET TO LORD BRASSEY.
Press Association—By Telegraph—CopTrißht. London, July 18. Mr D. Gillies (Ageut-general for Victoria) presided at a farewell banquet to Lord Brassey. Sir Westby Perceval was among those present. The gathering y#as of a moat representative character. Lord Brassey, in replying to the Coast of the evening, said that an assemblage like the present showed the desire there was to maintain the unity of thn Empire. The greatest duty of "colonial Governors was to foster every kind of feeling that would serve to bind the silken fetters of mutual pride and affection between the mother country and her daughterStatea. As one of the most active advocates of Imparial Federation, he could not reconcile it with his senee of public duty to decline the post when it was offered to h;m. He regarded the position not as an empty sinecure, but as aa opportunity for himself and,his wife to co-operate in avery effort for the advancement of the community in social happioess and the moral elevation of the people. Tfeey were going forth ready and eager for the work before them. He thanked Lord Hopetonn, the-former Governor, for the coansel and advice he had given them, and'wu resolved tq follow his predecessor's steps. Lord Rjpon said that he hoped the coloniea would maintain the Governors' salaries and thus facilitate the selection of suitable men.
