DUNEDIN HOUNDS
The meet of this pack at Wakari oa Saturday caused that locality to put on quite a holiday appearance. Bunting was gaily Hying over Mr Passmore's residence, aocl tha jumps were, all flagged off, presenting quite a' staeptecbase appeariiioe. The owners of fcha land crossed, Messrß Passmore, Marshall, and others, mast have gone to considerable trouble iv order to have everything in proper order. The attendance was the largest this season, and must have gladsned the hearts of the management As the public of Dunedin are generally willin» to pay for good sport, the exchequer must have benefited considerably. At the lowest calculation there must have been 80 horsemen besides a large number of persons in vehicles of various descriptions. Amongst those knowu to me, I noticed Mr E. Reid on Kelly ; Mr Patterson, Stockings; Mr J. Lowe, Toprail • Mr Godfrey, Maurice O'Rorke; Mr" Bu'rnos, Jack Harkaway; Mr R. Fanner, Dnnr*ven '• Mr Baird, Post and Rails ; Mr C. Newm%n' Donald Diunie; Mr R. Ellis, Chester; Mr James Gourleyj Waitangi; Mr S. Gourier Wharfedale; Mr, James OottoD, Briu; Mr Nolan, Belmont; Mr T. Gotten, Dua-'em-all-Mr Miller, Silvertail; Mr G Sise, Roany •Mr James M'Keweu, Rita ; -Mr Nixson, ParamuMr Wm.M'Keweu, Border Lad; Mr Hayes' Up-to-Date; Mr Patten, Rsckieiss; Mr h! Gouriey jun. (msster),' Saunterer; Mr H* Smith (huntsman), Digbv;. Mr; J. Batnber! Dunblane; Mrs Walcot, Jairy ; Mrs SwaDsoo, Donovan; Misa Forteseue, Selim ; Miss Dove, of Hobart, was nicely mounted on Countess. A four-horse drag from the Criterion Stables was tooled by Mr Martin; Mrs Myers and lady friends were present with horse and phaeton; Mrs Silk and friends, four-wheeler and the well - known dappled -grey ; Mr Roberts, dogcart; Mr.. R«id (Southland), buggy Mr H. Gourley, sen., and friend, dogcart; Mr Tsggart and Miss Laurtnspn, daisy cart. Punctual to time, at a signal from the master, intending followers rode into the paddock adjoining .Mr Passtaore'd homestead, presenting a very imposing appearance, there being no less than 22; with, a good sprinkling of red coats. Amongst the horses there were several well-known performers, some of which were cut for the purpose of qualifying the first obstacle encoutitered, a flighr, of. rails,.proved no bar to the majority of followers. A double was got over, consisting, of a; fair-sized stone wall and another flight of rsils ; but the succeeding fence caused tbe downfall of Belmont, who galloped off riderless, :ab"d joining tbe. huntsman kent there to the finish. . Dunraven' striking hard. Mr R. Farmer, kitsed.mother earth, his steed bemg cleverly caught by Mrs Swanaon. There followed anumber of small enclosures, the fences br-ing numerous eausingseveral horses to decline. The last fence was a.stiff blue gum three i-ailer, by which time the field bad been reduced to eight, comprising the huntsman on Digby the.whip on Dunblane, Mr Reid' on Kelly Mr Sise^on Hoao.y.iiVlr.«.,Gourley on "Wharfedale, Mr Godfrey on Maurice O'Rorke, Mr T,.C6tton on Dun-e'mrall, Mrs Swanson on Donovan,: -and Mr,Nix6on on Paramu.' After &h iiitevval came Jaefc Hsrkawaf.BriD, Silvertail, and other'sAtter ,a spell the .drag was again laid for a return run.. This proved a goou run, the pack tpllowmg the trail ,at a very fast pace. I tbinkthe only mifhaps were Silvertail unseating Mr Miller, and two; young fellows on bay horses, whose steh'ds took a fence or two on their own account. Followers, singular to say, finished very much in the same order as the first ruu, the Messrs Gourley on Wharfedale and Waitangt bting prominent.: ' >
A bye jug will b« held on Wednesday afternoon at Seaview, starting from Mr M'Gregor's homestead about balf^ast 3, and tbere is a probabilityof next Saturday's meet 'being -at Mosgiel. -.■>■■. , : "Nimrod.
