THE MISSING FISHERMEN.
TO THE EDITOR.
Sik, —I never was so much surprised as I was to-day on hearing that the committee who have charge of the.missing fishermen fund sold the advertising rights of the programme in connection with the forthcoming entertainment in the City Hall for a few pounds (I have heard on good authority £6 is.the sum). I think the most casual observer could realise the financial possibilities of such a sympathetic document as a programme, the proceeds of which would aid widows and orphans. The bluff sailor-man acting as canvasser would stride in to the wellwishing shopkeeper or merchant and gay,. "Look hero, mister, we want you to help the widows and orphans of our unfortunate comrades who lost their lives in the storm. Come, now, give uj an advertisement for our programme." What would be the result? Why these simple, honest, fellows would get no refusal. The assistance of a literary man could have been obtained without cost,, a few good illustrations of the disaster, and a most interesting tyochure would have bseri the result. Is it top much to suppese that £100 could have been obtained? I think riot. Bat the proceeds of this rich harvest goes to a private individual who has beeu lucky enough to acquire the rights for a few paltry pounds.—l am, &c,
