ENTERTAINMENTS.
*" A concert was given in the Saddle Hill Schoolhoujse on Friday evening. Mr Murdoch, chairman of the school committee, occupied the chair. No;doubt the unfavourable weather which pre-, vailed and the bad state of the roads had the 'effect., of .militating against the, attendance, -which, however, might be • considered satisfactory, rhe programme- submitted was a most enjoyable one, and the audience were not slow to appreciate the'efforts of the'performers during the evening. Miss Hood played two violin' solos with a taste and skill which elicited for her loud manifestations of approval; Mv Nelson gave a couple of humorous Scotch readings; Mr Turner gave a recitation ; Misses Finnic and West sang a duet;. and the soloists were Misses West and N. West, and Messrs J.-L. Miller and Strong. Mr J. U Laston played a pianoforte solo and accompanied the singers during the evening. The .concert was .followed by a dance which, as usual, passed off very successfully. , On the evening of Friday last a very successful concert was given in the North-East Harbour bchool uuder the ausp-"ces of the Sabbath School teachers, the Rev. A- Greig presiding. The performers were all local, and they did their several ;Parts ; ieinarkably well.' During an interval a service of fruit, kindly supplied by friends, was dealt put.to all present, and at tbe close a handsomely bound pocket Bible ot New Testament was .presented to. each child attending the babbath bchool. Some time ago prizes were promised to all who should answer ,so many questions of the Shorter Catechism without a mistake. Three—Agnes M'Kellar, Charles Pirie, and Philip-l_dwards—fulfilled the conditions to the letter, and nearly all the scholars did so well tt , i vas resolyed to give something,to each. Under Mr George Holmes, as superintendent, assisted* by Mrs. Holmes, Mr Challis, and Miss M Raynbird the North-East Harbour Sunday bchool was never iS a more prosperous condition, there being scarcely a child in the district who is not in attendance. '■'-'■ An entertainment was held at the Mechanics' Institute.-Hampden, on Friday evening, in aid of the funds ot St. Mary's Star of the Sea, Roman (-.athohc Church. There was a large attendance, f^uong those present being the Rev. Father ODonnell. The hall was tastefully decorated under the supervision of Mrs Culling. Mrs T Lynch (of Oarnaru. and Miss K. Blaney (of Dunedin) each sang a couple of songs in excellent ssyle, and were encored.. Messrs Flint and Brundeil gave a duet on the mandoline and guitar in each part of the programme, and, with Mr Yates, gave selections on the pianoforte, violin, and flageolet; Misses Booth and Joyce (Hampden) gave a pianoforte duet, and Mrs Smale a pianoforte solo. All of these items were rendered in a pleasing manner, and were heartily applauded. Messrs D. Isaacs and J. bwan kept the audience in roars of laughter while on the stage. The accompaniments "were shared by Mrs Smale arid Mr Yates, and Mr Tubman was stage manager.' An enjoyable entertainment was followed by a dance.
