WELLINGTON NEWS NOTES.

(Fjjom Ode Own Coebespondent.) -~'"■'■ Wellington, May 13. KtrKOUHS OF BANKS ___L_.LGA_IATION.As the session draws near I hear more and more of the proposed banks amalgamation that so signally miscarried last session. Just now there is said to be a difficulty between the parties in adjusting the incidence of the retiring allowances of the officers of ono of thei institutions, as provided ia the deed oE incbrpora-* tion. This difficulty, if it exists, will, however, no doubt be surmounted, as with others of a larger and more important character. At any rate, it is commonly, accepted among business men who do not speak lightly that the amalgamation of the National Bank with the Bank of New Zealand will certainly be the subject oE legislation during the coming session.- Meanwhile a gigantic lottery is beiug, I understand, projected for the purpose of enabling a speculative public an opportunity to invest its guineas on the chance of acquiring one or more pf many real property assets that are at present unliquiiiable securities. A bill will probably ba necessary to legalise this latest departure in banking. So that it is fair to assume that we may presently again witness sonic .singular banking legislation. It is worth noting that the attempt* to dispose of the real assets of the Bank of Van Diemen's Land under the auspices of " Tattersalls " failed dismally. WELLINGTON UNIVS-ESITY. It is stated that the names ef Messrs Hogg and Pirani, M.H.R's., Bishop Wallis, and Mr A. Warburtoa have beea submitted to the Governor as the Government nominations for seats on the Wellington University College Board.
