THE SALVATION ARMY.
Colonel Kilbey, of the Salvation Army, who holds the position of chief secretary for Australia and New Zealand, arrived iv town last night by the south express, accomp-nied by Major Lipgh and Brigadier Ho-lciu. The last* mentioned officer went a few daya ago to meet the. colonel and major at the Bluff on their arrival I'toin Melbourne, aud last night tho party were met at the Dunedin railway station by the Army, who waimly welcomed them to this city. A reoeption meeting was subsequently he'd in the fortress in Dowling street, theie boing a large number of persons preseut. During the evening Brigadier Hoskin referred in a humorous manner to the proceedings recently taken in Wellington against the Army for plaung in the street", his remarks causing a considerable amount of merriment. Colonel Kilbi-y subsequently gave.an earnest addre.s, in which he said that it was commonly aiserted nowadays that tbe r»-ligion of Christ wan played ont, and that it h.id lost its hold on the hearts of tbe people. He, however, maintained that if ih hid it was because it had been presented to (he people iv a namby-pamby fashion; and that it had ss much power ns ever it had to charm mankind and take hold of their hearts if it was brought before them in an enthusiastic manner.
