INTERCOLONIAL.
Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. ADVANCES TO SETTLERS. ' Sydney, March 13. The Sydney Morning Herald says ihat the board appointed-under the government Advances to Sattlers Act in New Zealand is finding no difficulty in lending money to settlers, and no one apprehended that it would. The doubts are respecting the repayment of the money. Government lending of any kind, whether of seed and wheat, to farmers of the land, to selectors, or advances to corporations, must be hedged around very strictly, or the State will get the worst of the business. In this colony the State never got back all the seed and wheat advances made. There have been attempts to repudiate full claims on free selections, and at present there are demands for assistance to selectors, while the town corporations have tried to free themselves of the responsibilities under the Government loanß for water supply puiposes. What is wanted is not any extension Of Government.lending to auy class, but the contraction of it. Then oui' creditors will feel safer, and we will be prepared to renew our loans when the time comes on tnoderate terms. The burnirig of the candle at both ends can no more be done by a Government than by an individual.
