WELLINGTON NEWS NOTES.
(Jboh Oub Own Coeeespohdent.) Welunoton, February 20.
A further purchase of consols stook by the Bank of New Zealand iB rnmoured, and I think it will be found to be the case, though It is difficult to understand the object of the transaction, unless to prove later that tiro and two make five, and the country is a gainecby the operation.
THE PROJECTED EXHIBITION.
The projeoted international exhibition seems not unlikely to " catch on," particularly as the Premier is understood to look upon it with much favour, and to be disposed to advocate a subatantial subsidy. Still, any large grant in aid is not likely to be approved by public opinion in the other provinces under existing financial conditions, and I notice that the Ministerial journal of Auckland has alreadypronounced against it. It certainly looks as though the promoters of the undertaking will have an excellent opportunity of praotuing that policy of self-reliance as to which the Government have of late been so unsparingly denounced for having abandoned. I have no doubt the Premier quite appreciates this aspect; of the question.
