SHIPPING SUMMARY.

This summary represents shipping evtmts of the period commencing December 24, 1894, and endiug January 20 of the current year, both •dates incluiivo.

STATISTICAL, FOBBION, ETC. During the period represented here shipping business has shown an upward tendency, and thing* have been brisker than they have for a considerable \ time past, this is mainly due to the influx of wool from the different up'country sheep fitatious, and to the large amount oE frozen meat and dairy produce which has been shipped away from the district of Otago, which is undoubtedly entitled to take premier position as a producer both of meat nnd dairy produce, its equable temperature allowing these necessaries to be produced in perfect condition. During tho period here represented the number of vessels of all classes which have arrived at tho port of Otago has bsea 50, with a total of 76,039 tons register, whila the departures were 45 vessels, registering a total of 71,735 tons. Last month the arrivals were 46 vessels, representing 61,112 tons registo?. and the departures 45 vessels, with a total of 54,846 tons register.

The arrivals from oversea ports this month have been 10 vessels, representing 24,454 tons register, and the departures five vessels, with a total oE 19,190 tons register. Last month the •Srrivsls from overseas were six vessels, with 15,222 tons, and the departures in the sama period two vessels, with a total of 10,672 tons register.

The first arrival during the present period was that of the Shaw, S&vill, and Albion Company's R.M.S. Doric, 4-784- tana, Captain Sowden, from London, via northern ports. She came into port on January 3, and was followed on. the sth in3t. by the fine steamer Duke of Westminster, of 3726 tons, Captain Prentice, from London (under contract to tho N.Z. Shipping Company), via Las Palinas, bringing 4000 tons of general cargo. The Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's fine Bailing ship Canterbury, of 1245 tons, Captain A. Cuthbert, with 900 tous of oargo from Glasgow, arrivsd at Port Chalafßrs on January 8 ; and was followed on the evening of the same day by the clipper barque Laira (of this port,l, Captain J. Patorson, master and owner, from Mauritius, with a par-go of 700 tons of aug«r. The next to arrive was the N.Z.S. Company's fine barque Waimea, of 848 tons, Captain Keston, with 1011 tons of general cargo from London. She re&ohed us on January 11, after a passage of 103 days. The N.Z.S. Company's R.M.S. Rimutaka, of 4515 tons, Captain H. E.. Green^treet, from Louden, via northern ports, arrived at Port Chalmers oh January 13; and was followed on the 14bh iost; by tho cargo steamer Strathord, of 2599 tons, Captain West, from London, via way ports: and the list of oversea arrivals is completed by the arrival on the 17th inst. of the barque Annie Fletcher, of 491 tons, Cipfcain Thomson, from Liverpool, via Wellington. . The first departure tor overseas during the month was that of the R.M.S. Kaikoura.'of 4507 tons, Captain Forbes, for London, via Lyttelton and Wellington, he? outward cargo from this port consisted of : 364 bales wool, 120 do rabbitskius, 74 do sheepskins, 46 do leather, 10 do tow, 50 cases preserved meats, 3445 do butter and cheese, 1681 carcases frozen mutton, and 4 pfcgs euudries. She left Port Chalmers on December 24, and was followed on January 6 by the s.s. Doric, of 4784 tons, Captain Sowden, for London, via northern ports. Her outward cargo from Dunedin consisted of 1220 bales wool, 22 do rabbitskins, 23 do sheepskins, 10 casks pelts, 2557 oases cheese, 778 do butter, 4082 carca?ea frozen mutton, aud 9 pkgs sundries. The Sh»w, Savjll, and Albion Company's clipper ship Crusader., of 1658 tons, Captain Burton, left the lower harbour on January 8 for London, taking, the following valuable cargo:—4Bss bales wool, 45 do sheepskins, 89 do rabbitskins, 39 do basils, 8 cssks' tallow, 20 do whisky, 2401 sacks oats, and 1 case sundries. The s.s. Dnke of Westminster, of 3726 tons, Captain Prentice, left Port Chalmers on January 13 for London, via the northern ports of New Zealand. And the list was completed on January 17 by the departure of that splendid steamship Rimutaka, of 4515 tons, Captain H. E. Greenstreet (a gentloman famed for his urbanity of manner), for London, via the north. She had the following Danedjn cargo on board:—los bales wool, .42 do rabbitskins, 41. do sheepskins, 3502 cases cheese, 735 boxes butter, and 8 packages sundries.

INTEBCOLONIAL. Oar trade with the Australasian coloniea this month has been quite up to the usual average, | the arrivals being 14 vessels, representing 27,908 tons register, and the departures 14 vessels, witb.» total of 30,584- tons. Last month the arrivals were 16 vessels, with 32,442 tons, and the departures 14 vessels, showing a total of 27,241 tons register. COASTAL, The trade between this pprt and thosa along, the seaboard of the colony has baen brisk during the past month, the arrivals numbering 26, with 23,67? tons register, and the departures daring tha same period 26 vessels, representing 21,981 tons register, against 24 arrivals last month, with 13,448 tons, and 29 \ departures, with 16,733 tons register. DOCKS, SLIPS, ETC. Great activity has prevailed during the month in the docks and slips, and several very large steamers have been docked and overhauled.
