VITAL STATISTICS.

The vital statistics for the Dunedin district for December 1894, compared with the corresponding month of 1893, are as follow :— 1893. 1894. Births 1245 1862 Deaths 591 607 Marriages 362 386 The following are the vital statistics for December:—

The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 295, against 343 in November, a decrease of 48. The deaths in December were 135, an increase of 5 on the number in November. Of the total deaths males contributed 64 and female* 71. Twenty-nine of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 2148 per cent, of the whole number, and 20 of these were under one yew of age. There were 29 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards. Men of 66, 67, 68, 69. 70, 71, and 82 (two) and women of 69, 73, 76, 77, B*. 85, and 86 died at Auckland; one woman of 67 at Wellington; men of 67 and 78 and women of 78 and 8* at Christchurch; and men of 65, 75, 76, and 87 and women of 66, 73, 75, 80, and 85 at Dunedin.

An important alteration was made on the Ist January in the postage charged on newspapers for the United Kingdom and foreign countries, as after that date the charge mil be by weight—namely, Id for the first *oz, and id foresch.j9uccecding.goz.
