MA CONSCIENCE! TO THE EDITOR.
Sm, —In the Christmas number of the New Zealand Graphic is an article descriptive of Duuedin and which contains a blunder moat horrible and awfnl to Scottish ears. The blunderer (well for him, perhaps, that the anonymity of the press shields hio identity) has actually told us that on one of two noble monuments in Dunedin is inscribed the nama of Scotland's famous poet—John Barns !!! Shade of thee "who in glory and in joy followed thy plough upon the mountain side," thou.art miscalled; but not to know thy true name argues the perpetrator of this astounding error himself unknown. One endeavours unsatisfactorily to "put" the place or race of this penman incog. A rose, we are told, "by any other name might smell as sweet," but show to any true-born Scot the above mistake, and if he does not " talk of louping o'er a linn," tear his hair, or do or say something emphatic or sarcastic—well, I'm a Dutchman. Shakespeare hath writ " What's in a name," but once the above error is Rpread abroad, I should not be surprised if, from Cape Van Diemen to the Bluff, the blunderer is dressed down in very plain English or fiery Lowland Scotch. I have not, "Pope, thy satire's dart," and meanwhile will stand aside. So hoping, to use the stereotyped phrase, of an abler pen taking np the parable, and that you, Sir, will grant me space to set the ball a-rolling,—l am, &c, Dunedin, December 26. A. D. P.
