UNIVERSITY COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the University Council was held in the Education Board's .Office yesterday afternoon, when there Were present—Messrs R. L. Stanford (in the chair), E. B. Cargill, D. White, G. G. Russell, the Hon. W. H. Reynolds, and Dr Hocken.

The report of the Finance Committee stated that the bank book showed a credit balance of £1773 14s 9d. A schedule of accounts had not been passed for payment, and tho registrar had been instructed to write to Professor Parker concerning them. Requisitions from Dr Scott for laboratory materials (costing £5) and from Dr Black (costing £7) were recommended for sanctipn. The registrar bad asked for instructions as to the investment of trust funds now in the Colonial Bank, and it bad beets orilered that the two amounts be placed oil a fixed deposit in the Colonial Bank for a term of 12 anonthß. —The report Was adopted without discussion.

The report of the special committee on finance was considered in committee and progress was made with it, after which the consideration of the report was adjourned to a special meeting. The Registrar brought Up the following repsrt re the Gray Russell scholarship :—" I have the honour to report for the information of the -council that one candidate, Collin Campbell Hutton, presented himself for the Gray_ Russell scholarship, and that in the .examination he obtained the following; marks :— Latin, 675 out of 1500; English, 660 out of 1000; French, 600 out of TbO; German, 532 out of 750; mathematics, 1100 out of 1500. The examination being deemed satisfactory, the board resolved to recommend that the scholarship be awarded to the candidate.—l am, &c, John Shand, chairman Professorial Board."—The council agreed to confer the scholarship as recommended. * An offer was received from Mr T. Potter for a lease of 700 acres at Shannon Point for 10 years, offering 6d per acre for it and to keep it clear of rabbits.—Declined. It was v unanimously resolved to appoint Miss Cruickshank assistant librarian for the smiversity. The oouncil adjourned at 4.15 p.m.
