AN ABSCONDER.
(Pee United Peess Associaiion.)
Tihaeo, May 7. The police have ascertained that Best, the absconding grain buyer, left the colony hi the Ruapehu on the 19th ult. The meeting of creditors this afternoon was informed that the Government will not take any steps to effect the arrest of the debtor unless all costs of the capture and return to Timaru, including the extradition if necessary, are guaranteed by the creditors. The creditors were advised that this was too large an order, and that they should _Mk the Government to name a fixed sum or a guarantee on which the Government would proceed. An inquiry was wired to this effect, a? the Ruapebu, on which steamer he left Wellington, will reach Rio before anything can be done. On a reply being received, the creditors decided to offer a guarantee of £100. If the Government do not accept this, nothing more will be done. The creditors thought it unfair they should be asked for coats at all, and two out of the six present refused to sign the guarantee.
