Auckland, May 5.
Mr A. B. Wright, road engineer, has returned from Russell. He formally took over the Kawbkiwa cosl rniiie on behalf of the Crown Lands Commissioners, and posted the necessary office notices on the ground. It appears there are two local syndicates each desirous of obtain-' ing possession of the ground and working the mine. The Government have stepped in meanwhile, and have taken possession themselves. In all probability the Government will put the mine up to public auction, subject to conditions.
The monument for the late King George of Tonga, ordered by tho Tongan Government to be executed in Auckland, is being taken to pieces to bo packed and shipped by the outgoing island steamer Upolu.
Mrs Sarah Taiwhauga, widow of the wellknown Mr Sydney Taiwhanga, tho late member for the Northern Maori district, died in the Costley Home yesterday.
