The Hikurangi Coal Company have commenced, under arrangement with the *R*ilway Commissioners, to ship coal over the HikurangiKamo section of the Whangarei railway to the Auckland market.
Professors Egerton and Seagar were welcomed to-day by the University College Council, and commence their duties at once. The students of the college give a conversazione in their honour.
The mayor has been approached by some parties with the view of establishing a night refuge on lines similar to those of Sydney and Melbourne.
Wellington, April 30. The City Conncil, in reply to a letter from the Public Works department re the Te Aro goods shed, have determined to adhere to the resolution of the ]oh|t committee with the Harbour Board opposing the construction of the shed, and demanding compensation if land is taken for the purpose. An important point wss decided by Mr Martin, R.M., in the Magistrate's Court, today, affecting English incorporated companies tradiog is New Zealand. Tne case was one in which Birnbaum and Co. (Limited), waterproof manufacturers, of London, Melbourne, and Wellington, sued G. W. Smart, pawnbroker, Manners street, for £30 odd, being the value of waterproof coats, &c. some time ago pawned by Mr Birnbaum, jun., then local manager for the company. It was contended by Mr Skerritt that the case must fall through, tho power of attorney empowering Messrs Peters and Birnbaum, jun., local representatives of the firm when the goods referred to were pawned being void, Mr Birnbaum having'left the colony without his power of attorney having been delegatd to his successor. This objection Mr Martin held to ba fatal to plaintiffs. All the judges are present at the Appeal Court, and there is a large attendance of the Bar. Fifteen cases are set down for hearing. It was arranged that the application under the Law Practiouers Act in regard to the Messrs Harper should be taken last.
CnniSTcnOTCH, April 30. The Board of Governors of Canterbury College decided to-day, subject to the recommendation of the Board of Advice, to appoint Mr J. R. Charlton, M.R.C.V.S., lecturer on veterinary science at the Lincoln School of Agriculture. The College Committee recommend the board to borrow £4000 for the purposes of increasing the accommodation of the Boys' High School. The matter was referred to the Estates Committee for its report. Mr H. R. Webb was elected chairman of tho board.
Tiiunu, April 30 A conference of delegates from road boards in Getaldine County met at Temuka to-day, and discussed tho small birds' nuisancs, the projected division of the county, and the approach of rabbits. Concerning small birds, the coufereecn endorsed the action of the county council, who have taken the matter in hand and last year spent neatly £1000, mostly in poisoning. No resolution was passed re the division of the county. After a long discussion it was resolved that the spread of rabbits iv South Canterbury endangers the agricultural portions of tho district, and therefore the conference press on the Government the urgent need for vigilance in checking the pest in the back conntry by erecting wire fences and otherwise.
