Tho Newspaper Press Directory 1894 (O. Mitshell and Cj., Fleet street, London). This directory, published at tha price of one florin, haa reached its forty-ninth annual issue, and as it appears to have undergone careful revision, its value is greatly enhanced. Arasugsfc the new features is a list of newspapers and magazines established and discontinued during the past year. Tie portion relating to Great Britain and Ireland, dealing as it does with 2291 newspipera and 206 L magazines or reviews, is very full; and the part dealing with the foreign press no doubt embraces the leading Continental journals. Mr Finlason, the legal editor, contributes an interesting and valuable article on the right of newspaper proprietors as to copyright and the liabilities as to libels, the latter showing what great caro has to ba exercised to steer clear of the shoals and quicksands which abound on every hand. Turning to the colonial portion, it is evident great care has been exercised in the attempt to give reliablo information, and the publishers are entitled to considerable credit for the enterprise displayed. In the colonies, however, changes take pUce bo rapidly that it U impossible to keep such a publication ia London abreast of what is oscurring. Oae fault only is all that we find it necessary to draw attention to in this portion of the work. In giving in the gazeteer section a list of the newspapers published in towns, the compiler annexes the language of the advertisement of that paper. As the writers of the advertisements are not always overburdened with modesty the English reader consulting the book to seleot his advertising medium does not receive much real assistance. Thus we find in one colony one of the paperß described as "the leading" paper, another as "the premier" paper, while the latter's rival iv tho eama town is put down as "the oldest acid bast." Despite thesa minor blemishes the Newspaper Press Directory is a valuable publication.

Ia " Macmillan's Magazine" for March Mr C B. It >ylance-Kent has a suggestive paper on " Tho Growth of National Sentiment." The conclusion at which he arrives is that national sentiment — aud with it also international animosity—tends to grow, aud even to assume au aggravated form, The hopeful forecasts based upou the progress of knowledge and improved means of communication between different nations of the world have, so far, at any rate, been falsified by events. "An Old Indian Magistrate" deals with the recent riots in Bombay, contending that any retrogression from tho policy of firm justice on the part of tho British would ba disistrous. Captain Gambier's theory that the honours paid to Columbus as the discoverer of America are due to Jean Cauain ara adversely criticised by a contributor.
