The cost of the Wellington licensing election was £160, or less than expected. Daring tho past year the losses by fire in Wellington were under £7000. Isaiah fake, who assaulted the Rev. Mr Habens last week, has been bound over to keep the peace for six months. The Wellington City Council have determined to insure firemen from accident on condition.; that the, men release the council from claims under the Employers' Liability Act. So far £8897 has been spent on the Wellington drainage scheme. There has been delay in ~ drawing the plans for the main works, and the contracts are not likely to be let for threa months yet. The Pahiatua Herald is responsible for tba statement that several settlers in the Forty-mile Bush who "sold out" to take upland at Cheviot have returned sadder and wiser men. There are SO sections in special settlements in Wellington, the area being 13,130 acres, which are liable to forfeiture, or which have been surrendered. TheWairarapa lawyers have petitioned the Minister for Justice to revise and consolidate the District Court Acts, and to extend their jurisdiction to the Wairarapa. Francis William Byrne, who for some time past has been obtaining goods from Napier shopkeepers by false pretences, has been committed for trial. The value of the articles procured by this means was over £40.

An old man, Henry Devoy, who, accordiog to Inspector Pender, has passed most of his life in gaol, has been committed for trial at Wellington for stealing a horse at Levin, and. was sentenced to three months' hard labour for stealing a saddle and bridle from another person. We would specially remind our readers tha Messrs Lorie and Co. are fast selling M'Arthur and Co.'s stock of drapery and clothing. The firm ask us to mention that they received yesterday the balance of this stock, which was delayed in transit. Among the lines just ÜBpacked are 500doz men's linen collars— usually 9d and Is each, now 3s dozen (there are at present all sizes and various shapes); white blankets, 5s lid pair; coloured blankets, 2s lid each; men's heavy colonial tweed suits— usually 379 6J, now 19s lid. The rooms were so crowded with customers when our representative was in that Mr Lorie could not spare time for further particulars, but we must not omit to mention a special line of very heavy linoleums—usually 4s 6d to 5s square yard, now only 2s 6d. There is little wonder that Messrs Lorie and Co.'s rooms are crowded when retail shops are doing nothing. ■
