THE WEATHER.

Mr Paulin advised us as follows last night :— "Strong to moderate S.W. to S.E. winds and rain showers, but indications improving, and barometer further rise."

The weather yesterday continued cold and wintry, with frequent showers of rain. Flagstaff JHill and Mount Cargill were heavily capped with snow. At Christchurch yesterday a strong gale was blowing all day, with bitterly cold weather. Our InvercargiU correspondent telegraphed last evening:—"A very strong westerly gale blew here yesterday afternoon, and all last night, accompanied by heavy hail showers. The Rotomahana, from Melbourne, and the Tekoa, from Timaru, ran to Halfmoon Bay, Stewart Island, for shelter, rather than enter the Bluff at dusk ou Sunday evening. Captain Edwin says the depression from tho west indicated on the 4th inst. as passing to the south of Foveaux Straits on the Bth caused a decrease of pressure of fully sixth-tenths of an inch in the southern part of the country yesterday, and is now about 200 miles to the eastward of Stewart Island. The cyclone centre, also indioated on the 4th, has passed to the eastward without approaching nearer than 300 : miles. ____________________
