PORT CHALMERS,
Time Ball at Port Chalmers.
The a.s. Napier, from the couth, arrived at 5.15 a.m. yesterday, and steamed direct to Dciedin. The b.b. Penguin will be floated out of the graving dock this morning, and her place taken up by the Tekapo. The R.M.S. Ruapehu, from Lyttelton, arrived off the heads yestarday afternoon, and was boarded by Pilot M'Donald, who brought her into port, and Bhe was berthed at the George street pier to take in cargo for London. She left Lyttelton at 6 p.m. on Saturday. The s.s. Brunner steamed up from Port Chalmers on Saturday forenoon, and took in cargo at the Rattray street wharf. She left yesterday evening for the West Coast ports, via Timaru. The storm which awept across the British Isles on the llth and 12th of February waß one of exceptional violence, and much damage was done both at set and on land. l Tbe centre of the storm traversed Scotland during tbe night of February 11, and on tho following day it crossed the North Sea. The barometer fell below 28in in Norway, a reading seldom equalled in Europe, and the gale was doubtless one of the most severe experienced of recent years, although it happily waß not nearly so destructive as the great storm of last November. At Greenwich the pressure of the wind registered more than 351b to the square foot, which is equivalent toan hourly velocity of about 85 miles.
The barque Kinclune was to leave Liverpool on February 26 for this port, via Wellington. A Wellington telegram says that the well known barquentine Elinor Vernon, which haa traded for several years between New York and New Zealand ports, has been Bold to Mr John Mill, of Port Chalmers, for between £800 or £900. She ig intended for a coal hulk at this port. The barquo Oen Pierre, now lying in the stream, will probably be sent on to Lyttelton to do hulk duty there. The ship Oamaru is loading at London for Wellington, and ia expected to Bail at the end of the month.
