NEEDLESS ALARM.

Gisuorne, February 26.—Considerable anxiety B is felt for the safety of the scow Whangaroa which left this port for Lyttelton on January 25 and has not since been heard of. She must have met the exceptionally heavy weather experienced by the Margaret Galbraith, and a vessel of her q class could scarcely weather such a gale as that, being fiat-bottomed and riding very light. The Whangaroa was a new boat of 130 tons register, capable of carrying 200,000 ft timber. Captain q Burns was accompanied by his wife, and the crew numbered six. f Hokiti ka, February 26.—The scow Whangaroa, Captain Burns, reported by to-day's Gisborne wire as missing, arrived here yesterday with general cargo from Lyttelton and Timaru. She had previously sailed from Gisborne to Lyttelton, and, though encountering rough weather, the ?essel behaved admirably.
