The barque Wilhelmine received her orders yesterday morning, and left Otago Heads for Bluff Harbour, "at which port she loads for the United Kingdom. , The barque Comadre, which arrived off Otago Heads on Saturday morning, received orders yesterday to proceed to Lyttelton to load for Home. We notice that the well-known little powder schooner Ark has changed hands, Captain Joyce having Bold her at a satisfactory figure to Messrs Sutherland and Patterson. The Ark was faithfully built at Port Chalmers some 28 years and three months since, by Mr N. Murray, from designs by Mr D.' G. Stevens, specially for the powder trade. She is coppered and copper fastened throughout, and is in as good order today as when she left the builder's hands.

ARRIVAL OF THE PERTHSHIRE.

The Shire Line Company's fine steamship Perthshire arrived at Port Chalmers, and was berthed at the ocean steamers' wharf at 4 p.m. yesterday. "She is commanded by Captain Wallace, late of the Nairnshire, who has with him the following deck officers:—Mr W. Clements chief, Mr W. Chicken second, Mr E. B-urell third, Mr C. Forder fourth. The engines are in charge of Mr H. W. Fawdon, R.N.R., M.1.M.15, who was last hefe in the company's steamer Nairnshire, and with him are associated Messrs A. M'Lachlan, J. Marshall, A. Farminer, and J. M'AUister for the main engines, while Mestrs G. Paterson arid J. Burns are the * refrigerating engineers. Ihe chief stewdrd is Mr 0. Henderson. The Perthshire is an exceedingly handsome steel ship, built and engined at Newcastle-on-Tyne by Messrs R. and W. Hawthorne, Leslie, and Co., and is rigged as a btigantine. Her dimensions are—Length 435 ft, breadth of beam 51ft, and depth of hold 32ft moulded. The goods measurement is 5550 tons, and the net 3622 tons. She has five holds with a cubical area of 40,100 ft, capable of storing 8100 tons of dead-weight cargo. Three of the holds are insulated and otherwise adapted to the conveyance of frozen meat, dairy produce, and other perishable commodities. The engines are of the tripleexpansion type, develop 3000 indicated horsepower, and derive their supplies of steam from two large single-ended steel boilers working up to a pressure of lOOlb to the square inch. The diameter of the cylinders is 30in, 40in, and 78in, with a stroke of 54in. The boilers are operated under the reduced draught system of Messrs John Brown and Co., of Sheffield, and are fitted with six of Purves's flues, besides Messrs Brown and Co.'s patent serve boiler tubes and retarders. The latter is a novel and economical appliance for " retarding " the natural velocity of thewaateheatpassing off into the atmosphere. The. refrigerating machinery consists of two complete sets of compound tandem engines, in duplicate, specially manufactured for use in connection with the Linde ammonia system of freezing. Acomplete installation of electricity in every compartment enables the engineers and stevedores to carry on operations in the insulated holds at any hour without depending for light from the ordinary lamps, with which the men are generally supplied before going below. Large electrical cargo lamps, hung from the rigging, enable cargo to be discharged or received on. the'darkest night. To expedite the handling of cargo, she has all the latest and mo3t modern labour-saving appliances, including 10 steam winches. The winches, windlasses, capstan, pumping engines, and electrical dynamos were supplied by Messrs Clarke, Chapman, and Ce., of Gatesbead. A set of Messrs Bow and M'Lachlan's steam-steering gear is set up in the after end of the main engine skylight. The hand-steering gear and the accommodation ladders on each quarter are on principles patented by Mr J. Wotherspoon. Accommodation for 12 passengers, as well as for the officers and engineers, is supplied on the upper deck, on which a long house has been built amidship. The appointments are of a very superior class. The crew are housed under the forecastle head. We are indebted to the courtesy of Mr W. Chicken, the navigating officer, for the following report of the Perthshire's passage from Home :— She started from North Shields on November 13, on which date she was taken for her trial spin. She behaved admirably, and steamed 12 knots per hour. She next proceeded to Plymouth, and having taken in water supplies and stores the started for the colonios in ballast trim on November 1!).
