A CELEBRATED CHIEF PASSING AWAY.
(Fbom Oub Own Correspondent.)
Auckland, January 15.
News from Waikato states that Rewi Mangi Maniopoto, the celebrated old chief of the famous Ngatimaniopoto tribe, is very ill at present at his home on the banks of the Ponia, beyond Kihikihi, and it is believed that his death is not very far off. Eewi is about 75 years of age. Some years' ago the Government built him a comfortable house in Kihikihi, bat he seldom lived in it long, and for some time past he has been living in his old settlement on the Punia river almost within sight of the site of the old Orakau pa, where he and his fellow Maori Kingites made their last stand against the troops in 1864-. Rewi has drawn an annual pension of £210 from tho ; Government of New Zealand for some years past, but it doss > not seem as if the old man will live to draw it much longer. : ..■
