The hour is rapidly approaching when you will be called upon to decide in whose hands the affairs of this colony shall be placed for the next three years. SOCIAL REFORMERS, EDUCATIONAL REFORMERS, TEMPERANCE REFORMERS, And all who are favourable to the Advancement; and Uplifting of the People ' are urged to VOTE EARLY ON TUESDAY NEXT And VOTE STRAIGHT For the following ticket:— CITY: PINKERTON, HUTCHISON, BARNSHAW. CAVERSHAM : -ARTHUR MORRISON. CHALMERS: J. A. MILLAR. WAIKOUAITI: G. J. BRUCE. WOMEN OF OTAGO! 25n OUR HOPE IS IN YOU. WAIKOUAITI ELECTION. Mr T. SMITH wishes to return his very sincere THANKS to the ELECTORS in the vaiious centres for the very kind RECEPTIONS they have given him, and trusts they will REMEMBER him at the POLLS. . 28n -^yAIKOUAITI ELECTION. As there appears to be some uncertainty in the minds of Electors as to who is the - GOVERNMENT CANDIDATE for this Seat, I think it right to make public the fact that from the commencement of my. candidature I have had the direct acceptance of the Government. On 24th October laßt the Hon. R. J. Seddon telegraphed to me:— ■ I am very pleased indeed to accept you as a candidate for the Waikouaiti seat in the Government interest. From what I can gather, it is the general wish of our supporters in that part of the district that the Government should accept you and render you all the assistance we can. This will be cheerfully given, and from what I can gather the prospects are very good, and I feel assured that in you the district -will have a very capable, painstaking, and worthy representative. RECOGNISING THE DANGER of defeat te the Party if two Candidates went to the poll in the Liberal interests, I plaoed ment, and wired Mr Seddon: Agree leave you decide which retire. The Premier has asked Mr Bruce to abide by his decision, but has up to this moment received no reply, and on Friday wired me: Do not desist from using very best efforts. From what I can hear, you stand very well. LIBERAL ELECTORS OF WAIKOUAITI I Do not suffer yourselves to be misled in this matter. If your votes are divided, defeat may follow. If united, VICTORY IS ASSURED. Respectfully yours, 28n , ANDREW THOMSON. mO THE ELECTORS OF WAIKOUAITI. Ladies and Gentlemen, — You will have the opportunity To-day of. expressing your minds respecting THE VILEST PIECE OF POLITICAL TRICKERY ever practised on a body of intelligent Electors. Right on the eve of the Election, when it was impossible for me to get my Reply properly circulated before you had voted, Advertisements are inserted making the MOST UNBLUSHING MISSTATEMENTS, to further the Candidature of a certain person and mislead you. You will realise from these very Advertisements the amount of . UNDERHAND, BASE DODGERY that has been going on to effect my defeat and secure for Mr Seddon and the Liquor-Ring a pliable tool. You will know "from the outset I have fearlessly declared myself a Liberal and supporter of the Seddon Government, while reserving to myself the right to vote on all questions according to the dictates of my conscience. This did not suit, and a blind supporter was demanded. Now you are told that as far back as October 24 Mr Seddon had pledged himself to Mr Thomson—at that time an almost unknown man in the Electorate, who could never be expected to be in touch with an agricultural community. Why in the name of all that is honest and aboveboard was it not declared sooner that Mr Thomson was Mr Seddon's nominee and was to be forced on the Electorate whether they liked it or n0t?..1 came forward by request of the Electors, and when Mr Thomson subsequently forced himself on the people I, in all parts of the Electorate, expressed my willingness to LEAVE MYSELF IN THE HANDS OF THE LIBERALS OF THE ELECTORATE to say whether Mr Thomson or I should retire in the Party's interests. The LIBERALS EVERYWHERE DECLARED FOR MR THOMSON'S RETIREMENT, and resolutions to this effect were passed at meetings and forwarded to the Premier. Mr Seddon, however, refused evidently to give effect to the wishes of the Liberals here, and dictates to the Electorate whom they should elect. I call upon every true Liberal to resent outside interference with their affairs, and feel convinced they will now see clearly who is honest and straightforward in this contest. No committeemen of mine ever met and agreed I should be left to the tender mercies of the Premier, especially after he was pledged to Mr Thomson. To all of the Premier's requests that I would place myself in his hands I replied that I would leave it to the Liberals of the District to say whom they wanted to be their Candidate, and have always replied to his communications as soon as they came into my hands. The necessity for publishing this pains me exceedingly, but there was no alternative. Should you honour me with your confidence at the Ballot Box To-day, you will find me acting thoroughly straightforward in the future as Ido now; and despite this unpleasantness, I shall be found a Liberal heart and soul, and a supporter of the Liberal Government. Yours faithfully, GEORGE JAMES BRUCE. 28n £UTY MAYORAL ELECTION* A GENERAL MEETING of Mr CHAPMAN'S COMMITTEE and SUPPORTERS will be held THIS (TUESDAY) EVENING in the Kooms, Octagon, at 8.30 o'clock.
