Auckland, November 26.—T0-day the German cruiser Buzzard arrived from Apia (Samoa). Affairs were quiet in the group when she left. She has come here to bo extensively overhauled and repaired, and her stay in port will extend over some three months. She ia to be placed in the Calliope dock. Capt*in F. Chtenhoefer retains command, but her officers, engineers, and most of the crew only joined the vessel last month from Germany. Wellington, November 26.—Arrived : Dingadee, from Auckland; Rotorua, from Nelson; Penguin, from Lyttelton. Sailed: Orowaiti, for Greymouth; Kennedy, for Nelson; Mahinapua, for Nelson, Taranaki, and Manukau. Lyttelton, November 26.—Arrived: Wareatea, from Westport; Omapere. from Dunedin. Brunner, from Wellington. The Wareatea spoke the ship Nelson off Stephens Island, bound to Wellington. Sydney, November 25.—Arrived: Wenona, from Auckland. November 26—Arrived : Tarawera, from-Wellington. On the voyage she spoke the ship Turakina, bound from Liverpool to Auckland. Sailed (on Saturday): Mararoa, for Auckland.

Hobart, November 25.—Sailed: Passa, for Lyttelton '; Kenilworth, for Auckland. Newcastle, November 25.—Sailed: Grecian Bend, for Timaru ; Kate Tatham, for Napier. -London, November 24.—Arrived: Tekoa, from Wellington (October 1); . Hawke's Bay, from Lyttelton (September 27); Matatua, from Bluff (September 30).

THE DIRECT STEAMERS. The Doric, from Lyttelton (12th October), arrived at Plymouth on Friday last with her cargo of meat in good order.

The s.s. Napier, with cargo from the coast, arrived at Dunedin at 11.30 p.m. of Friday, and after landing cargo left again on Saturday-after-noon for Owaka.

h_t s s-'Manapouri, from Melbourne, via Hobart , and the Bluft, arrived at the tongue wharf at 4.30 a.m. on Saturday. MrW. Nancarrow (the purser) reports that she left Williamstown at 3.45 p.m. of the 18th mat., and cleared Port Phillip Heads at 6.15 p.m ; had Swan Island abeam at 11.35 a.m. of the 19th inst., and arrived at Hobart at r 5.50 arm of the 20th; left again at 5 p.m. ; had Tasman Island abeam at 8.30 p.m., and passed Puysegur Point at 10.30 p.m. of the 23rd inst., arriving at the Bluff at 6.50 a.m. of the 24th inst. left again at 3.10 p.m. same day, and arrived at headquarters as above. She had moderate southerly winds and fine weather up to the 23rd mst., then strong S.E. winds with high seas to the Bluff, and thence fresh S.W. winds to arrival. The barque Obed Baxter is expected to leave Dunedin to-day for Lyttelton. The s.s. Manapouri steamed down to Port Chalmers on Saturday afternoon, and was taken into the graving dock. The s.s. Wakatipu, from Sydney, via Cook Strait, arrived at the George street pier, Port Chalmers, at 11.30 a.m. yesterday. We thank Mr Murley (the purser) for files and the-following report :—She left Sydney at 4 p m. of the 17th inst, and experienced fine weather and smooth seas to arrival at Wellington at noon of the 22nd inst.; left again at 2 p.m. of the 23rd inst., and reached Lyttelton at 7 a.m. of the 24th ; left agaiu at 7.30 p.m. of the 25th, had fine weather down the coast, and arrived as above. The ship Woolton, which left Newcastle on June 14 for Valparaiso, has not since been heard of, arid is posted at Lloyd's as missing. The usual excursions to the West Coast Sounds by the s.s. Tarawera will commence on January 21 from Port Ohalmers. The s.s. Flora,. from Wellington, via intermediate ports, arrived at Port Cbalmers on Saturday afternoon, and passed up to Dunedin. The American barque H. J. Libby left New York on October 31 for D unedin.The barque Waipa is 81 days out from New York for this port. ' The American barque E. L. Mayberry left New York for Dunedin and Lyttelton on November 1. The barque Hudson is now 115 days out from Glasgow, and should soon put in an appearance at the heads. The Southwark, launched from the yards of Messrs William Denny and Bros, at Dumbarton, is Haid to be the largest dead-weight carrier afloat. She is built to the order of the International Navigation Company, and sho is a steel, twinscrew, with engines on the quadruple-expansion principle. Her dimensions are 480 ft by 57ft by i0 r[h _S, d _ she "ejected to carry a dead-weight of 10,000 tons.—Nautical Magazine. A powerfully-geared special lathe for turning propeller shafts has just been constructed by Sharp, Stewart, and Co. (Limited), of Springburn, for Messrs Lobnitz and Co , Renfrew. The fast headstock has five independent series of gear, and is driven by a five-speeded cone, giving 25 chauge3 of speed to the spindle. The maiu spindle is of forged4steel, and its front journal is 12in in diameter. The bed is 55ft long. There are two saddles, each with two tool-rests, and a special sliding rest is fitted to the loose headstock for turning the flanges for couplings, so that all five tools cau be in operation at one time. The total weight of the lathe is between 55 and 60 tons, and it will be able to finish propeller shafts at one cut taken from end to end. —Fairplay.
