CATTLE.
The display of cattle was hardly so large as it has been at some former shows, but the animals exhibited compared favourably, on the whole, with those shown here previously. There were altogether 116 exhibits, the best represented breed, as usual, being the Ayrshire, of which there were altogether 54 specimens in the different classes. Fat cattle were the next largest class, comprising 20 exhibits. Then came Shorthorns to the number of 18. Of Polled Angus there were 14 exhibits, of Alderneys 9, and of crossbred (dairy) cattle there was only one representative, while the Hereford breed were altogether unrepresented. The cattle were shown under disadvantageous circumstances, the heavy heavy rain which continued to fall all day preventing them from appearing at their best, and rendering the task of judging by no means a pleasant one.
