THE PREMIER AT TIMARU.
TiMAßtr, November 23. The Premier had a great reception to-night, when the Theatre Royal was crowded to the back of the stage. He spoke over three hours, mainly as at Lyttelton and Gore, with a few local references as to the need for land for settlement, and more fully as to the new Licensing Act. A rota of thanks and confidence in the Government was carried by a great show of hands and cheers. ! . ■ i THE SUCCESSION TO MR BALLANCE. Auckland, November 23. The following letter has bean received by the secretary of the New Zealand Political Reform Association from Sir Robert Stout, in reference to inquiries as to the lata Mr John Bailance's wishes as to his successor:—" Dear Sir —I have the. honour to acknowledge receipt by to-day's mail of yonr letter of the 16th inst., requesting me to reply to your association re the late Mr Ballance's wishes as to his successor. I have to say Ido not see how that should influence the election, and I do not think that the question should be raised at present. The time will no doubt come when the truth regarding my late friend's wish will be said. Meanwhile, you will excuse me nob answsring your question.—Yours, &c, Robeet Stout."
