The brig Rio Logo is taking in cargo at the Jetty street wharf. The ship Tnranaki was towed,.down to Port Chalmers yesterday morning and will leave for London without delay. The s.s. Penguin, from the north, arrived at Port Chalmers at 5 a.m. yesterday and readied the Kattray street wharf at 6 a.m. She left Nelson at 8 p.m of the 3rd inst., called at Picton, ellington, and Lyttelton, left the latter port at 1 p.m. of the sth inst., aud reached headquarters as The' Government steamer Hinemoa, from Wellington, via the coast, arrived at Port Chalmers at ?i p.m. yesterday. Another of the old landmarks has passed away in the person of the late Captain James Ferguson, who for the la3t 29 years ha 3 been an active officer of the Union Steam Ship Company's service. Captain Ferguson some 28 years since succeeded the late Captain Johnson as master of the Harbour Steam Company's well-known steamer Golden Ago. After the inception of the Union Company our old friend held a position of great trust at Port Chalmers, and on relinquishing it took service again as an officer of the company's steamer Pukaki. Captain Ferguson was a most generous man, and was noted at all times for his genial kindness. He was mate of the Golden Age in ISO 3, with Captain James Malcolm, and steadily worked himself up to the command. All the shipping offices and the vessels in port half-masted their colours yesterday in token of respect for the deceased gentleman. Tho s.s. .Dingadee loft Eattray street wharf yesterday evening for Westport direct. The s.s. Omapere steamed up from Port Chalmers yesterday afternoon, and after taking in cargo, left the Rattray street wharf for the West Coast ports, via Timaru. The s.s. Waihora, after landing cargo at the Victoria wharf, steamed down to Port Chalmers yesterday and was taken into the graving dock. We regret to hear that Mr A. W. Crawford, the chief inspector of machinery for this district, died yesterday. The late Mr Crawford was formerly engineer of the p.s. Lioness some 28 years since, and after serving in the Beautiful Star and Maori with Captain James Malcolm, was appointed a Government inspector of machinery for Otago and Southland. Mr Crawford won a host of friends by his kindly manner and willingness at all times to oblige persons with whom he came in contact.

The s.s. Mararoa, from Sydney, via Wellington and Lyttelton, arrived alongside the Bowen pier at 5.30 a.m. yesterday. She left the company's wharf, Sydney, at (i.5 p.m. on the :50th ult. aud cleared the heads at (i.35 p.m.; experienced a succession of heavy easterly gales with terrific high seas from the 31st ult. until the 2nd inst., and owing to the dangerous nature of the sea, and to minimise her risk to her fruit cargo, the speed of the ship was reduced at intervals on the Ist, 2nd, and 3rd inst.; passed Cape Farewell Spit light at 0.52 a.m. on the 4th inst., Stephens Island at 6.30 a m., and reached Wellington at 10.30 a.m.; leaving again at 7.15 p.m. same Jay, called at Lyttelton, and left that port again at 2.50 p.m. on thesth, arriving as above, having had fine weather down the coast. She sailed again yesterday afternoan for Melbourne, via the Illuff and Hobart.

The s.s. Omapere was busy yesterday discharging grain to the Waitangi. The s.s. Taupo was hauled alongside the Rotokino yesterday to discharge coal. The s.s. Maori sailed yesterday afternoon with part of original cargo for Lyttelton. The barque Luttenvorth is talcing in stiffening ballast at the cross wharf.
