Oi.uis,
The Dunedin Bowling Club's green in-Cum-berland street was opened on Saturday, under the most favourable auspices, and the scene presented during the afternoon was an animated oue. The weather was simply perfect, and more than compensated for the disappointment of the previous Saturday. The attendance of members and visitors was large, including quite a number of ladies. The Ordnance Band, under the conductorship of Mr Coombs, were stationed on the tennis court, and played a number of selections at short intervals, adding greatly to the~afternoon's enjoyment. Among the visitors were his Worship the Mayor, the mayoress, and Mr "Walter Bentley, the latter joining in the game. Afternoon tea, which was greatly appreciated, was dispoused by Mrs Haynes (the wife of the president) aud the Misses Hayues. The match was the time-honoured one oE President v. Vice-president. Sides having been chosen from those present at 2.30, the president, Mr C. Haynes, declared the green open. After thanking the visitors, aud especially the ladies, for attending iv such numbers, he congratulated the club on its bright prospects and the indications of a successful season, and hoped that with the aid of the many young bowlers who had joined, the club would maintain its reputation and position, and add further laurels to those which had been gained in the past. Play was then proceeded with, and it was at once evident that the green was in splendid order, being both true and fast, its general appearance and condition reflecting credit ou Mr Morton the caretaker, who must have been gratified by the praise which was expressed on all sides. Tho result of the game was a win for the President's side by a majority of 15 points. The following were the players and scores:— PRESIDENT. VlCf-PRESIDENT. J. Cameron AY. Smith J. Murray J. Jack J. Caledonian Bowling Club,
The Caledonian Club's green was also opened on Saturday afternoon, and a large number of members and their lady friends attended. The green, contrary to expectations, was in capital order, a fact which must be attributed solely to the attention and exertions of the newly appointed caretaker, Mr John Renfrew. The I grounds were decorated with flags, and a flooring had been laid on the site of the proposed" new bowl-house and covered in with flags. The surrounding fences with the borders of flowers and trees have very much improved the appearance of the club's grounds. The Misses Rose and Kate Blaney dispensed tea and cake provided by the president (Mr C. Greenslade), while the president, vice-presidents, and other members were actively employed in serving the ladies and visitors with refreshments, which were greatly appreciated. Mr R. Adair (piper to the Burns Club) enlivened the proceedings by discoursing the national music of the Caledonians. The event of the afternoon, a match President v. Vice-presidents, was played off, in which six nnks were engaged. The result of the match was fchat the Vice-presidents (Messrs J. A. j Kirby and J. M.
