(Received September 29, at 9 p.m.) By the steamer Star of Victoria 100 tons of plant for extracting minerals from ore by the Luhrig process has been shipped to New Zealand, consigned to the Ores Reduction Company. ANGLO-COLONIAL ITEMS. ' The Earl of Kintore, Governor of South Australia, has telegraphed to Lord Ripon, Secretary of State tor the Colonies, denying that there is a deficit, and stating that a small surplus is expected. Lord Ripon has invited the Agents-general to meet him on the 30th to discuss colonial matters. , Sir E. C. N. Braddon, in an article in '|Blackwood's Magazine" on the Tasmanian silver fields, states that the Tasmanian mines are regarded as more phenomenal iv wealth than Broken Hill, and considers that it is likely that there will be quite 60,000 people on the Zeehan and Dundas fields by the end of the year. The Countess of Jersey has an article in the "Nineteenth Century" on her recent visit to New Caledonia. It is reported that the Gladstone Government in 1885 ordered Sir Robert George Hamilton (at present Governor of Tasmania, who was then Under-secretary for Ireland) to draft a scheme of Home Rule for Ireland.

September 29. • (Received September 30, at 1.10 a.m.) The Daily News, referring to the reported withdrawal of deposits from Australian banks, states that the rumour originated in the London office of some of the northern banks, through whose hands some.deposit receiptsipassed for collection. The News considers the'statements misleading, and asserts that the deposits in any of the Australian banks are now at the highest point ever touched. The banks, it says, are very strong in the matter of cash, and the position in Australia is safe. MARRIAGE REFORM. The Rev. Mr Allen, secretary of the Marriage Law Reform Association, urges' the Agentsgeneral to agitate for a reform of the marriage laws. SENTENCES. Messrs Beyts and Craig, trading as Beyts, Craig, aud Co., steamship agents, of Old Broad street, E.G., and who were acting as agents in London for a Bombay firm, have each been sentenced to two years' imprisonment on a charge of forging bills of lading to a considerable amount. . Dr Scott Saunders, formerly an officer in the army, who was arrested in Liverpool on a charge of forging the name of Scolde Brothers to a cheque, has been committed for trial. IN DIFFICULTIES. The liabilities of Trischler and Company are set down at M.5,000. A composition of 7s 6d in the pound is offered. THE CHOLERA. Cholera has reached Ghent, the capital of Flanders. The number of deaths recorded in Hamburg yesterday was 53. The new treatment, by which perspiration is produced, is reported to have been very effective in staying fatal results Cholera is decreasing in Bqlogne. THE SPANISH VINTAGE. Madrid, September 29. (Received September 30,' at 1.15 a.m.) The Spanish vintage is both good in quality and quantity. The cereal,; crop, however, is deficient, and it will be necessary to import L 4,000,000 worth. .'. "

(Received September 30, at 11.50 a.m.) Replying to a question as to whether the Government would take proceedings in connection with the various financial institutions, Premier Shiels said that there was a wellestablished rule that before the AttorneyGeneral could take action a'written statement as to the alleged breaches of the law should be submitted to him by someone who would take the responsibility of laying an information. A NO-CONFIDENCE DEBATE. Sydney, September 29. (Received September 29, at 11.50 a.m.) It has been arranged to take the division on the want-of-confidence motion to-night. Several doubtful members have announced that they will support the Government, who expect a majority of from eight to ten.
